It is October and Difference Leaders have been teaching and leading in Alternative Provisions across Greater London for four weeks. Each half term, as well as a day’s worth of training, a tutor visit and fortnightly supervision from a psychologist, Difference Leaders come together for a Twilight, to share best practice.
This year’s twilights are being hosted by our friends at Morpeth School in Tower Hamlets, in their beautiful Professional Development room. Morpeth have been generous colleagues; in return for their hospitality we’ve trained their staff team in trauma-aware practice this year. Morpeth part of The Difference’s mainstream professional development course this year.
At the Twilight, Difference Leaders caught up over some pizza, sharing stories of their first weeks and their new school settings. This was followed by discussions from Assignment 1, as Difference Leaders presented one another on student induction practice in each of their AP schools, and discussed what they might share and steal to strengthen processes.
Over the next two years, our leaders and their schools may experiment with different baseline tests for wellbeing and safety of students; innovate in their induction processes and their involvement with parents; or alter ongoing processes to monitor pupil experience and sense of belonging in their schools.
Exploring the strengths of different classroom pedagogies, school policies and local practices is a key objective of The Difference Leaders pilot programme. Over the next three years, Difference Leaders in our first 9 local authorities, and the second cohort working in a further ~20, will gain a real perspective on best practice across the sector. (Think you’d like to join Cohort 2? Or know a teacher who would? Find out more here.)
Difference Leaders left the Twilight full of questions and ideas ready to return to their schools and discuss what they learnt bringing back suggestions of new processes that could be implemented.
