Our journey so far

A former leader in inner-city schools, Kiran was Head of Policy at the Social Mobility Commission when she had the idea for The Difference in 2016. By December Kiran had raised enough capital to fund the research paper ‘Making The Difference’ understanding the issue of school exclusion further.

In January 2017, the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) agreed to incubate The Difference, as it had done previously with social work innovations Frontline and Think Ahead.  Since then, The Difference has won Teach First Innovation Award and been backed by over 30 charities, trusts and education organisations committed to improving the lives of vulnerable young people.

In October 2017 we published our report ‘Making the Difference’ with extensive support from former Conservative Education Minister, Edward Timpson; former Labour health minister and government social mobility tsar Alan Milburn; and chair of the Education Policy Institute and former Schools Minister David Laws. The launch also announced the backing of The Difference by the two biggest multi-academy trusts (MATs) in the Alternative Provision sector and three of the biggest national mainstream MATs in the UK.

The Difference has successfully raised awareness of exclusion in England featuring heavily in mainstream media. Our influence has been political as well as public. Following, the Secretary of State’s focus on Alternative Provision, The Education Select Committee announced an inquiry into school exclusion, calling our founder Kiran Gill to give evidence in November 2017.

After a fantastic period of research and collaboration our movement becomes a reality as we deliver our pilot programme. Recruitment for our first cohort of The Difference Leaders will begin from September 2018 and our teachers will begin their journey from 2019. If you want to make the difference in our pioneer cohort please contact us.
