The Difference’s Internal Alternative Provision Symposium Thursday 13th June 2024

The odds are you’re doing it. They’re doing it down the road too. They do it across the country. Some people don’t even know they are doing it. Some of them do it some of the time. Some of them do it all of the time. And all the while nearly everyone has their own name for it…

You need to face up to it. You can’t hide from it. We really need to talk about Internal Alternative Provision.

Nurture unit, Inclusion hub, Isolation room, unit, base, bridge, there are many names and many ways to structure your Internal Alternative Provision (IAP).

The Difference recognises that when it comes to IAP the practice is ahead of the policy and - despite a groundswell of schools and academies setting up provisions - codifying and understanding good practice is crucial.

What’s happening and who is it for?

After kicking off research into IAP with NFER, The Difference set up an online network of just under 100 school leaders to come together and share effective IAP practice and principles, but it became clear that an in person event was in demand.

The Difference is opening up the IAP symposium to any school, academy or setting that has an IAP, is in the process of setting one up, or is thinking about creating one.

The IAP symposium will be held at a world class venue, in the auditorium and wider offices of Allen & Overy LLP, One Bishops Square, London E1 6AD - close to Liverpool Street Station and a 10 or 15 minute tube ride from London Euston and Kings Cross respectively.

What is the line up?

The full line up will be announced Friday 10th May and will include content for primary and secondary middle leaders/senior leaders, MAT leaders and resource leaders. Extensive networking opportunities will be a core tenet of the day with session themes covering two core planes - Strategic planning/Oversight and Operational/Implementation.

The IAP symposium will be perfect for anyone thinking about and working on:

Strategic planning/Oversight of IAP: Purpose and clarity for resources; Strategic pathways in and out; Specific success measures and ongoing assessments of efficacy; Finance and Business Case models; Staffing; Ensuring quality; Boundaries between AP and IAP; and more…

Implementation/Operational level: Relationships with students; Supporting reintegration into the main offer; Quality of offer - curriculum; Student outcome measures and success; Referral in; Messaging in the school/ status/ perceptions among other staff and students; Working with families; Working with external agencies/partners; the physical space and more…
